 Join COSC, City of West Des Moines and HOME, Inc. as we celebrate the completion of the West Des Moines Affordable Green Demonstration Home!! This project presented a unique collaborative opportunity for a community-supported new construction home, which illustrates that green can be affordable and practical.
This event is free and open to the public. Stop in to speak with experts involved in the home's construction. The demonstration home provides numerous examples of sustainable techniques that can be included in any construction or remodeling project.

COSC is pleased to host two open houses at Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation's (NEICAC) West Union Affordable Green Demonstration Home. Come speak with experts involved in the home's construction and learn about sustainable techniques you can include in your construction and remodeling projects!

Center on Sustainable Communities (COSC) launches a quarterly social gathering titled "COSC connects" at 5:00pm on Monday, June 7th, at the Des Moines Social Club. To help kick off the evening of engaging sustainable networking, COSC is pleased to feature Green Living Project’s only Iowa stop on its national multimedia mobile tour that is chock full of illuminating environmentally focused concepts. The Green Living Project Mobile Tour: Expedition in Central America presentation showcases cutting-edge global sustainability projects of charismatic and hardworking individuals and communities in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.
“COSC connects” brings together young professionals, architects, designers, realtors, entrepreneurs and others interested in getting inspired and gaining awareness about the possibilities of achieving greater sustainability in Iowa.
Attendees will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, an affordable cash bar and free giveaways from Green Living Project (GLP) sponsors, which include National Geographic, Gregory, KEEN and REI. GLP's presentation is from 5:30-6:30pm.

Green Demo Home Open Houses
COSC hosted three Green Demo Home Open Houses at the Des Moines Affordable Green Demonstration Home on Forest Avenue on Sunday, May 17th and Tuesday, May 19th. The home was open to the public to learn about the green elements incoporated into the home that is applying for LEED Silver certification.

COSC Holiday Open House
On Tuesday, November 18th COSC hosted a Holiday Open House at their building in Historic Valley Junction. Members, sponsors and interested public met for an update on COSC and great networking!
Iowa Home Crafters Open House
Iowa Home Crafters hosted a COSC member open house in Madrid, IA, Monday, August 18th. We visited a home that utilizes a solar hot water system, dehumidified Earth Loop cooling, Universal Design features, a whole-house rainwater collection system, dual flush toilets, a canning kitchen and root cellar, and much more!

Open House Networking Social
On Monday, November 12th, COSC held an open house at the passive solar home of Jenny McCoy, on of our Board Members. Orlo Stitt, Jenny's father who designed the house, gave a brief presentation and was available for questions about the home's green elements. Mr. Stitt has been building green for 30 years and was the very first recipient of the National Association of Home Builder's Green Builder of the Year award in 1999. On Monday, August 27th, COSC members were invited to attend an open house hosted by Coldwell Banker MidAmerica Group Metro. It took place at a new green home near Winterset. To see the listing, click here.

On Monday, May 21, 2007, Hubbell Homes hosted a COSC Member Social at their conservation community in Waukee. Approximately 40 people attended the event and toured show homes for the community with all the green elements highlighted.
